All women deserve the royal treatment; so it’s only fitting we possess the perfect crown!
Made from a combination of luxury fabrics, decals, sequins, feathers and delicate silk flowers, Helena Rose designs covetable headpieces to make any woman feel like a princess.
Lovingly handcrafted in Sydney by designer Helen Maalouf, each piece is of itself an exquisite work of art.
NetStyleShopper recently spoke with Maalouf about her headpieces, fashion and the way forward for Helena Rose.
Q: Helen, tell us about Helena Rose.
A: Helena Rose sells high quality headpieces and accessories made for real life princesses, lovers of roses, silk and all things floral! I handcraft each piece myself. All are unique. We also offer a styling service for photo shoots.
Q: Why headpieces?
A: I started off designing fashion, which incidentally led to me designing headwear. In 2012, I designed a few headpieces to complement our summer clothing range. They were such a big hit I decided to concentrate on making headpieces instead of clothing (for a while anyway). I will be releasing a new clothing range towards the end of this year, but headpieces are still my main focus for the moment!
Q: How do you go about conceptualising a design?
A: It’s all about fabrics, textures and fine details at Helena Rose. Fabrics and beads are usually sourced first which, in turn, inspire me to come up with new pieces. I like to place elements straight onto a mannequin head and go from there. Very rarely do I draw a concept first. I do sketch ideas for bridal customers to give them an insight into my thoughts, but I will always create a mock up piece using fabrics and show them as well.
Q: What materials do you use in creating your pieces?
A: I aim to use only the highest quality flowers and headbands I can get my little hands on! I also hand-make 50% of the flowers, especially for my bridal pieces, using silk chiffon and satin. While this may make my headpieces a little more expensive, they are quality and one of a kind. I also use fabrics such as tulle, lace, satin and even ostrich feathers.
Q: Is every part of a piece handmade?
A: All pieces are designed in Australia and handmade by me. Some elements of a piece may be bought, such as some of the flowers or clip-on butterflies, but they are used in conjunction with the handmade elements. I also do all of the beading by hand using crystals and pearls.
Most of the pieces I design are a complete one-off, ensuring each customer receives a unique piece suited to their style and vision. I will happily re- make a design, but it will never be an exact replica.
Q: To where would one wear your creations?
A: Our everyday range 'Glitz and Glam' is mainly bought by customers for work and everyday wear. We have recently introduced a bridal range catering for brides, bridesmaids and flower girls. Items from our seasonal ranges can be worn for the races, weddings, christenings, birthdays, dance or theatre productions… the list is endless.
Helena Rose caters to all events and occasions, with a diverse range of styles. A made to order service is available creating pieces specific to each customer’s requirements at no extra cost.
Our pieces have been worn by Miss Earth Australia 2013 – Renera Thompson, Miss World Australia Contestant - Stefania Lasek, and Miss Philippines Australia Candidate – Glyssa Perez. We have also been featured in the Miss World Fashion Showcase Charity Event 2014 and Khmerama Festival & Fashion Show 2014.
Finally, we offer a range for children called 'Little Petal'.
Q: Which movie star do you most admire and why?
A: Jennifer Lawrence. I love how she followed her dream at such a young age, knowing she wanted to be an actress. She reminds me of myself and my determination to start fashion design at the age of 16 to pursue a career.
I love her sense of style, down to earth nature and passion to help children with disabilities. I admire this particularly as I have a beautiful sister, Rosemary, who is disabled. Rosemary was my inspiration for naming my label 'Helena Rose'.
Q: Helen, how would you describe your own personal style?
A: I like to wear a lot of 'bling'; more is more for me! I love to accessorise and adore different textures and materials, crazy styles/cuts and 'out there' statement pieces. I also like to wear a mix of vintage and modern pieces together and, of course, a headpiece is mandatory at all times!
Q: To you, fashion means...
A: Expressing yourself and showing off your personality through colours, textures and style. I don’t believe fashion is about being on trend or the amount of money you spend. Fashion is about being creative, thinking outside the box and wearing what makes you comfortable and confident with a passion!
Pricing: Helena Rose headpieces start at $15AUD for children and $50AUD for adults. Bridal or larger detailed pieces begin from $150AUD.
