A chic hat is a must-have fashion accessory for the upcoming spring season; especially when it’s from uber-stylish headwear brand fallenBROKENstreet.
“Mysterious, floating through time, kicking your heels off, joy, tasting the air – it makes you feel alive and happy”, is how Justin Crawford, co-founder of fallenBROKENstreet, describes the style of his Byron Bay based label.
The brain child of two surfers originally hailing from Sydney’s northern beaches, fallenBROKENstreet is all about felt hats and beanies which exude ‘très cool’.
The theme of the label’s upcoming summer collection titled “Never Lost nor Found” is “whispers and zephyrs getting thrown around broken minds.” The new collection sees the introduction of a selection of straw styles and full felt caps into its range.
Editor, Michelle Larin, caught up with co-founder Justin Crawford for a brief chat about his popular urban headwear brand.
Q: What is the story behind fallenBrokenStreet?
A: FallenBROKENstreet was created in a moment in time by me and David Frim. We were both familiar with the fashion industry and thought “let’s put our little brains together on this project”. A week later we were shooting the lookbook for our first beanie collection in my house at Dee Why.
Q: Tell me about the design team.
A: There are three of us in our little team now - Frimmy, Diva and me. We are all pretty ‘cruisey’ people so it’s fun. The inspiration we get is a continual thing - just like art. We take bits from here and there. We all have a pretty good ‘eye’ so that makes it easy to work together. Being based out of Byron Bay, there is inspiration in the air everywhere. The atmosphere up here is definitely conducive to creating.
Q: You make hats and beanies – why these particular items?
A: It started with the beanies; we just wanted to make the type of beanies you would find at op-shops/fetes – you know, the ones your granny would knit you. That’s where the brand was born and the hats followed.
Hats are fun and are also an object of history. Back in the day, everyone wore hats. They are statement pieces, which can also alter your mood depending on which style you put on.
Q: What inspires the design of your hats?
A: Each of our hats has a different mood and is a reflection of the way we want the brand to go.
Q: What makes the perfect hat?
A: Mmm… that’s really a personal thing. Usually, it’s the hat that is worn the most. It’s the one that has travelled far with you. It’s the hat which embodies your dreams and that carries a story. It’s the hat that speaks to you.
Q: How should one wear their hat?
A: Like a stylist zephyr, floating with time.
Q: On your website you state, “In here, it’s like we are kids at a daycare centre just waiting for our parents to pick us up but, they never do” - can you tell me more? What does this mean? I’m intrigued!
A: The industrial estate at Byron Bay has so many amazing artists/creators/designers. It is, in a sense, one big child care centre. In saying this, those that create great usually have young minds. A perfect example is Ollie Buckworth of byronflim.com. He did our stop motion film for us, with the end result being the above statement.
Q: What’s next for fallenBROKENstreet?
A: Our adventure into unknown dreams will continue in our creation of fun hats.
