Introducing NetStyleShopper's gorgeous and talented new Beauty Editor, Kelly-Marie Waters. With almost a decade of experience as a make-up artist working on editorials, advertisements and campaigns for fashion designers, Kelly loves that she "gets to have fun, be creative and never stop learning!"
To Kelly, "a girl always looks her best when she is happy, smiling and flaunting her favourite shade of lippy!"
We asked Kelly a few questions about herself, so you too can get to know and love her like we do!
Q: Kelly, when did you know you wanted to be a make-up artist?
A: Growing up I always loved drawing and making 'arty' things with lots of colour and glitter, but I honestly didn’t have a clue as to what career path to take!
I have always been a 'girly girl'. My mum Tina encouraged me from a young age to take pride in my appearance. We would have lots of fun experimenting with everything beauty-related, from hair-perming and colouring to waxing. We even both qualified as nail technicians.
When I turned 18, I started working at a small cosmetics counter in a department store. It was here I had my first taste of being able to empower women through make-up application. I haven’t looked back since!
Q: Give us some examples of the shoots you have worked on.
A: I have mostly worked for local New Zealand and Australian fashion designers; usually for their new season campaigns and sometimes runway appearances. "Lookbook" shoots are always great as each designer requests a unique look. The story behind each designer's collection is key to the direction I take with the make-up.
I have also enjoyed working on various advertising campaigns, as they never require just a simple beauty look! In some of my jobs, I've been asked to create the look of sunburn and even apply fake facial hair!
Other shoots I have worked on are standard beauty shots for publications. Recently, I created basic hair and make-up looks for Fairfax’s Smart Investor magazine.
Q: What do you love most about make-up artistry?
A: I love that what I do has the ability to change how people feel about themselves. I love that I can give a woman that little bit of extra confidence to take on the world.
It also depends on who or what I am working on, but I also love creating a look from start to finish - especially when I have no clue what the end result will be!
Q: What is your favourite type of make-up look?
A: Again, it depends on what I am working on, however a false lash cannot be beaten. Be it a set of individual lashes or a beautiful strip lash, lashes always finish off a look!
But…if I had to choose a favourite "theme", I would have to say the Twiggy 60’s makeup look. It's creative, beautiful and even today very wearable.
Q: What is the must-have beauty item that should be in every girl's cosmetic bag?
A: Definitely a BB ("beauty balm") cream. BB creams are multi-use products, which come in "5 in 1" formulations or sometimes even "9 in 1" formulations.
Depending on your daily beauty routine, they can act as your sunscreen, primer, moisturiser, Illuminator and foundation all in one! My favourite is Napoleon Perdis' Auto Pilot BBB Cream SPF30 ($55AUD).
Q: End this sentence for us, "Beauty is…
A: …everywhere but not everyone can see it!"
