Two sisters shared a vision to create exquisite lingerie that is "beautiful, fun to wear and makes a woman feel good". Almost two-years ago, Jess and Penny Green realised that vision, launching their label Age of Intimacy.
The label kicked-off with Jess making one-off pieces for the purpose of styling friends photo shoots using lace, silk, micro-fibre, bamboo and blended
fabrics. Now, the sisters' label has evolved into a fashion brand with three
different lines: Indie Rose, Poppy &
Saffron and Charlotte (the latter two are
"The label itself is designed around women. I love to tell stories and so I tend to start my designs with a story or theme and go from there. I am inspired by colour, history, nature, the outback and buildings. I am also a bowerbird. All of these elements influence our designs and the look of our photo shoots," says Jess.
To promote their label and, at the same time, support a charitable cause, Age of Intimacy has teamed up with creative powerhouse A Series of Fortunate Events to produce a series of live performance evenings in support of "beyondblue", a national depression awareness initiative.
“Depression is something I have been dealing with for a number of years now, so beyondblue was an obvious choice. The thing with depression is that you don’t really know how it will take over your life until you fall into it," explains Jess.
"Cotton Candy" is the first in the series of live performance evenings and is being held on Thursday, 6 June 2013 at Studio 501, 11 Randle Street, Surry Hills, NSW. A musical and entertainment extravaganza, the evening will consist of choreographed dance performances, lingerie runway shows and aerial acrobatic demonstrations. Guests will be treated to fire-twirling performers, captivating contortionists, Australian-grown Beelgara Estate sparkling and edible cotton-candy delights.
Editor, Michelle Larin, recently interviewed Jess and Penny about their lingerie label and penchant for all things interesting and beautiful.
Q: Tell me about the designers behind the Age of Intimacy label.
Jess: Well, there is two of us! Myself and my sister Penny. We grew up in Broken Hill in outback NSW. Our upbringing encouraged creativity; we were given opportunities to develop our interests and independence.
It's funny that we grew up in the desert, as we both love paddle boarding on the harbour and hanging out at the beach. Our goal is to learn how to surf!
A: Did either of you study fashion design or work in fashion before launching the label?
Jess: I studied a Bachelor of Design majoring in Fashion Design at the Whitehouse Institute of Design. I then interned with Pleasure State, Romance Was Born and Moss & Spy. I also completed a Certificate 4 in Small Business Management. Now, I am effectively the design director and product director of our label. I also do the styling, maintain the social media side of things and have sole responsibility for the overseas production of our Poppy & Saffron line.
Penny: I studied a Certificate 4 in Clothing Production and then went on to work for a tailor. I oversee production of our label in Australia and I also scout the locations for our shoots.
Q: Describe the Age of Intimacy woman?
Indie Rose: She is a 22 to 35 year-old woman with a social conscience. She's a working professional who loves fashion, has no children, knows what she wants in life, is generally flamboyant and loves dressing up!
Poppy & Saffron: She is a younger woman - under 22 - who is adventurous and fun loving. She is in the phase of discovering what she likes, what her style is and who she is as a person. She prefers simpler styles and comfort over fashion trends.
Charlotte: She is a bigger-busted, beautiful woman deserving of good-fitting, well-made lingerie! NO more "grandma" bras.
Q: What is it about lingerie design that appeals to you most?
Jess: I love textures and so I enjoy the detail that can be put into a piece as small as a bra or undies.
Q: Where is your lingerie made?
Jess: Indie Rose is made locally in Sydney. We are working towards our next line Poppy & Saffron being made in Indonesia. This will allow us to offer our lingerie to a younger market at a more affordable price point. Of course, we still aim to produce our line ethically!
Q: Who are your style icons?
Jess: Vivienne Westwood and John Paul Gotye.
Q: Define your personal style.
Jess: I call it ‘Whisper Wild’ - a mixture of vintage, whimsical and sometimes practical, but with a bit of sparkle and shine. I have an obsession with shoes. My favourite pair at the moment is my shiny Geoffrey Campbell’s.
Penny: Subtle in comparison to Jess, but still a bit quirky and ‘wild and woolly’. I love natural textures and wear a lot of wool, cotton, linen and leather. I like colourful socks and flat shoes. I especially like things that are well made. Also - don’t touch my hair!
Q: What piece of lingerie should every girl own?
Jess: A bra that fits well and gives you great cleavage, with matching briefs that look good and feel great.
Penny: One pair of super-bright coloured undies. Your bra and undies do NOT need to match, but everything should fit beautifully.
Q: What does romance mean to you?
Jess: Romance is how you feel about yourself.
Penny: Our label itself is all the romance one can handle!
