Meet up-and-coming 22-year old Sydney-based freelance photographer, Heidi Huttunen. From the moment Heidi learnt to use the family camera at the tender age of 12, she knew she would have a career behind the lens. In 2007, Heidi established her business "Heidi Hannele Photography" specialising in photography, film and graphic design.
Heidi also has a modelling background, enabling her to direct her subjects and create images from the perspective of both model and photographer. The images she captures simply radiate beauty.
I recently treated myself to a photo shoot with Heidi to commemorate the final year of my 20s. During our shoot, I took a moment to ask Heidi a few questions about her work.

Q: For how long have you been a professional photographer?
A: I'm coming up to about 6 years in the industry. I grew up with a family who loved art, so I guess it's in my blood. I have been very creative and artistic since my early childhood. I started my career photographing children and families.
Q: Describe the types of photographic shoots you undertake.
A: I shoot anything and everything, from weddings to pets, newborns to fashion labels - I love it all! Most of my work involves shooting models, creative portfolios, look-books for fashion labels and beauty portraits, as well as children and families. I have shot for up-and-coming fashion designers, jewellery labels such as Beads By Aadore, award-winning make-up artists, hair and wardrobe stylists.
Overall, I have a strong love for capturing special moments, which is where my passion for photography stems.
Q: What's your favourite type of shoot?
A: I have to say fashion. I'm a shopaholic and in the midst of designing my own swimwear label.
Q: What do you love most about being a photographer?
A: I love that I am able to explore my imagination to its depths. I love being able to get creative on every shoot. I adore creating stories and helping others to achieve their goals.
Q: How do you describe your photography style and what inspires it?
A: My photography style varies depending on what I'm shooting. I love shooting soft, classy, whimsical concepts and I would have to say my style is often very feminine (or with a feminine touch at least). My biggest inspiration in the industry is and has always been Russell James. He shoots for Victoria's Secret, Vogue, Elle and Sports Illustrated. I especially idolise him for the connection he forms with his models.
Q: Do you draw inspiration from any other fashion photographers?
A: As a photographer, you are constantly seeking inspiration from the world around you, including other photographers. I seek inspiration from anyone and anything, not just those who are famous. Other than Russell James, I am inspired by the works of Alessandro Dal Buoni and Georges Antoni, as I love their black and white themes. I also take inspiration from English photographer Lara Jade, who I have seen grow internationally from the very early stages of her career.
Q: Do you prefer to shoot in your studio or on location?
A: I have to say location. I love that I'm not limited and can make use of the entire surroundings.
Q: Are there any particular models you enjoy working with?
A: I am always working with new models and I haven't yet met a person I haven't loved working with! Each model brings to an image a new light and a different story. Experience is irrelevant.
Q: What’s the best advice you can give an aspiring photographic model?
A: Keep an open mind - that's the best advice I have received. As with anything, success comes from hard work and passion. It's also important to stay true to who you are.
