Fun, feminine and wearable, Sydney-based fashion label LADAKH has been dressing local fashionistas for over a decade.
Created by two friends who began making clothes in their crowded inner-city lounge room, LADAKH has grown into an internationally recognised label stocked at stores including Free People, Urban Outfitters, Revolve Clothing, Nasty Gal and Anthropologie.
With its “it” girl styling, exotic prints and vintage elements, LADAKH’s collections fuse high-end trends with a sense of playfulness and adventure.
Earlier this year, Australian fashion designer, Marnie Skillings, assumed the role of Head Designer after shutting up shop on her namesake label, known for its imaginatively beautiful aesthetic.
With the recent change in creative leadership, NSS Editor, Michelle Larin, wanted to find out more about Skillings’ vision for the fashion-forward label and her move in-house.
Q: Tell me, Marnie, what prompted your move over to LADAKH?
A: After 12 years of having my own boutique label, I really felt I had come full circle as a creative. I was ready for a new challenge. The fast paced, international nature of LADAKH has given me a new set of challenges and a renewed passion for design and creative direction.
Q: What initially inspired you to pursue a career in fashion?
A: Simply, the desire to live a creative life.
Q: What do you love most about working for LADAKH?
A: I love working with a creative and amazing team, and also part of a company that is always striving to do better.
Q: How do you describe your design style?
A: Fun, layered, eccentric and feminine.
Q: What’s the theme behind LADAKH’s current collection?
A: LADAKH’s "glass roses" collection (delivered in Jan/Feb 2014) is inspired by prisms; the light and colours they throw and contrast . For this collection, we worked with contrasting brights and clean modern silhouettes to create our pieces.
Q: Who is the “LADAKH girl”?
A: She is fun, adventurous, trend-aware but not solely trend-driven. She is a girl with awesome style, who loves to mix things up a bit. She is a little boho, a touch vintage inspired, but totally modern.
Q: Describe your personal style. What is your quintessential “go to” outfit?
A: I love a great frock, but layered with a clashing or unexpected print on a cardi or shoe. I am also a fan of a super dressy skirt worn in the day with a distressed tee.
Q: What does style mean to you?
A: Style is freedom of expression and a feeling of effortlessness; that is, not trying too hard to look ‘stylish’.
Q: What’s next for the LADAKH label and for you?
A: For both of us, it’s to further hone our signature look, explore new design directions and techniques and to keep having a blast creating collections!
